Never Have I Ever by Joshilyn Jackson

Amy Whey is proud of her ordinary life and the simple pleasures that come with it—teaching diving lessons, baking cookies for new neighbors, helping her best friend, Charlotte, run their local book club. Her greatest joy is her family: her devoted professor husband, her spirited fifteen-year-old stepdaughter, her adorable infant son. And, of course, the steadfast and supportive Charlotte. But Amy’s sweet, uncomplicated life begins to unravel when the mysterious and alluring Angelica Roux arrives on her doorstep one book club night.

Sultry and magnetic, Roux beguiles the group with her feral charm. She keeps the wine flowing and lures them into a game of spilling secrets. Everyone thinks it’s naughty, harmless fun. Only Amy knows better. Something wicked has come her way—a she-devil in a pricey red sports car who seems to know the terrible truth about who she is and what she once did.

When they’re alone, Roux tells her that if she doesn’t give her what she asks for, what she deserves, she’s going to make Amy pay for her sins. One way or another.

To protect herself and her family and save the life she’s built, Amy must beat the devil at her own clever game, matching wits with Roux in an escalating war of hidden pasts and unearthed secrets. Amy knows the consequences if she can’t beat Roux. What terrifies her is everything she could lose if she wins.

A diabolically entertaining tale of betrayal, deception, temptation, and love filled with dark twists leavened by Joshilyn Jackson’s trademark humor, Never Have I Ever explores what happens when the transgressions of our past come back with a vengeance.

My Review

Well the punches kept coming throughout this book and I was caught off guard with each one. The revelations revealed were increasingly more smoking than the last and I loved it.

From the description I knew it would be a interesting read but once I started I was kind put off by the basic-ness of the plot with the game being played by adult women. It didn’t seem like it could get juicy at first but boy am I glad I hung in there. It didn’t take too long and POW I was hit with the first blow and then shortly after another one that almost knocked me off the sofa!!

I won’t go into how this story plays out because I SO want you to check it out for yourself, but I will say this… not only was the story believable because we all have secrets of some sort that we stuff down deep but the other plot twists fit nicely into it where it wasn’t overwhelming at all…in fact it was rather thought-provoking!

What’s Up Next? New Releases this Week, October 13th

Description

A speculative thriller in the vein of The Handmaid’s Tale and The Power. Optioned by Universal and Elizabeth Banks to be a major motion picture!

“A visceral, darkly haunting fever dream of a novel and an absolute page-turner. Liggett’s deeply suspenseful book brilliantly explores the high cost of a misogynistic world that denies women power and does it with a heart-in-your-throat, action-driven story that’s equal parts horror-laden fairy tale, survival story, romance, and resistance manifesto. I couldn’t stop reading.” – Libba Bray, New York Times bestselling author

Survive the year.

No one speaks of the grace year. It’s forbidden.

In Garner County, girls are told they have the power to lure grown men from their beds, to drive women mad with jealousy. They believe their very skin emits a powerful aphrodisiac, the potent essence of youth, of a girl on the edge of womanhood. That’s why they’re banished for their sixteenth year, to release their magic into the wild so they can return purified and ready for marriage. But not all of them will make it home alive.

Sixteen-year-old Tierney James dreams of a better life—a society that doesn’t pit friend against friend or woman against woman, but as her own grace year draws near, she quickly realizes that it’s not just the brutal elements they must fear. It’s not even the poachers in the woods, men who are waiting for a chance to grab one of the girls in order to make a fortune on the black market. Their greatest threat may very well be each other.

With sharp prose and gritty realism, The Grace Year examines the complex and sometimes twisted relationships between girls, the women they eventually become, and the difficult decisions they make in-between

Good Little Liars

by Sarah Clutton

Description

Emma held the photo for a long moment before her eyes focused on the girl’s face. She dropped it and let out a muted cry.The girl in the photograph was Tessa.

Twenty-five years after losing her friend Tessa in a tragic accident, Emma’s life is happy and settled. She rarely thinks about the day that Tessa fell to her death, or the secret that she made Emma swear to keep just hours before. But when her marriage implodes, Emma and her daughter find themselves unexpectedly moving into the headmaster’s former cottage on the grounds of her old school – Denham House. And it’s here she finds the photograph: an explicit image of Tessa, looking directly at the camera.

Between catching up with old friends Marlee and Clementine, who are home for a reunion, and the demands of single parenthood, Emma has plenty to distract her… but she can’t shake the image of the photograph. Or the thought that it’s proof of something she had long suspected: Dr Brownley, now headmaster, was involved with Tessa. Was it a mistake to keep quiet about what she knew?

Marlee and Clementine have their own complex feelings about returning to their hometown. And when Emma starts to question what really happened to Tessa, each woman must deal with the consequences of decisions they made all those years ago. Because the more Emma digs into the past, the more she discovers that everyone remembers it differently, and that the innocent schoolgirls she thought she knew are hiding some very big secrets.

A page-turning novel about family drama, lies, and the secrets we keep to protect those we love. Perfect for fans of Liane Moriarty, The Silent Wife and Kerry Lonsdale.

Revenge by Gaynor Torrance

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Description

Why are dead bodies appearing when no one has been reported missing…?

When mutilated female corpses are discovered in shallow woodland graves it becomes apparent that a serial killer is at large.

With no one reported missing, no apparent motive and no obvious suspect the investigation proves to be far from straightforward.

As suspicion falls upon those associated with the privately-owned woodland, it soon becomes clear that there are sinister secrets they are determined to hide.

Detective Inspector Jemima Huxley is put in charge of the case. But Jemima has dark secrets of her own…

Can Jemima lay her personal demons to rest?

Or will the case threaten to overwhelm her?

And can she catch the killer before more women turn up dead…?

My Review

A deep, dark plot that reveals secrets people keep all while the Investigator Jemima Huxley is on the case in hopes to uncover all the details.

I was drawn in rather quickly and thoroughly enjoyed the story. For some who find rape and violence too hard to stomach… and I don’t know anyone who doesn’t, the book was hard to read in some areas. Written so well that avoiding the mental trauma just from the words is almost impossible.

My Review

With multiple layers, Katie somehow joins them all together perfectly while still managing to keep you in the dark until the right time.
Even though a lot of clues point to the cause of Ellie’s situation, you won’t fully understand the depth of it all until to read through to the end.
The book opened the door to get a closer look and just how far people will go to quench their grief and how no matter what the intention. it almost always ends up being more painful.
A great fall read for anyone looking to get cozy next to the fire or even for that last warm day before the chilly weather hits!

Dark Water by Robert Bryndza

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Description

USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Robert Bryndza is back again with the third book in the thrilling, crime series, starring Erika Foster, which has sold over 2 millions copies worldwide. When Detective Erika Foster receives a tip off that key evidence for a major narcotics case was stashed in a disused quarry on the outskirts of London, she orders for it to be searched. From the thick sludge the drugs are recovered, but so is the skeleton of a young child.

The remains are quickly identified as seven-year-old Jessica Collins. The missing girl who made headline news when she vanished twenty-six years ago.

As Erika tries to piece together new evidence with the old, she discovers a family harbouring secrets, a detective plagued by her failure to find Jessica, and the mysterious death of a man living by the quarry.

Is the suspect someone close to home? Someone doesn’t want this case solved. And they’ll do anything to stop Erika from finding the truth.

My Review

I’ve shied away from books that are part of a series, either because I’d be picking up between books or I’be had a hard time getting invested in the story. By with Robert’s book Dark Water, I didn’t get any of those feels. In fact, I’d even go as far as to say that I could see myself reading books 1 & 2 and waiting patiently or not so patiently for the 4th book to get released.

With the characters feeling real it’s hard not feel like your involved in their plight and although I wouldn’t say I like them, I definitely felt invested in their fate.

My Review

Can you imagine waking up after a car accident involving you and your child? No, how about if there was another mystery child who was also in the car on impact?

I know, right? This kind of story can’t be ignored and I was hooked right after reading the quick summary. Running from a traumatic and turbulent childhood, Holly finds happiness in her adult life with a nice husband, a job she loves and her own family where she’s not fearful of what the next day would hold or what people’s true motives are. She know the little family she’s worked so hard for is what she’s always needed. Unconditional love without schemes and crime in the mix.

I can’t give anything away, other than tell you a surprise awaits you. Does Holly get what she wants in the end? And if so, what is it that she REALLY craves.

The Cult Of Eden by Bill Halpin

Description

Newlywed Will Battese finds himself homesick and overwhelmed after following his ambitious wife, Shannon, to New York City. When a surprise pregnancy shreds their already meager budget, Will drops out of college and settles for work at a low-end diner. There, a small act of kindness draws the attention of Victor Degas, a man with an unsettling presence and deformed eyes. Unbeknownst to Will, Degas belongs to an ancient, sophisticated cult known as the Edens and believes Will to be the key to gaining otherworldly power. As the sun sets on Good Friday, Degas orchestrates a home invasion in which Will and his baby boy, Gideon, are kidnapped, leaving Shannon to join forces with an unreliable agent from the Roman Catholic Church. While Will struggles to save other innocents from the Eden parish below the city, Shannon discovers that the cult plans to use her family for an unimaginable demonic ritual, and that the Vatican may let it happen. With no one to trust but themselves, Shannon and Will must fight not only to survive, but to keep their humanity intact.

The Cult of Eden aims to bring a new angle to the canon of religious horror, exploring the motivations of villains and Catholic lore. The perfect novel for horror fans seeking depth and subtlety to balance out the scares.

Advance Praise

In the age-old struggle between Good and Evil, between Christianity and Satanism, there are heroes and there are villains. However, as The Cult of Eden reveals, in the heat of battle it is not always clear who are the good guys and who are the bad… as black and white certainties are swept away by a tide of blood-stained grey. Charles Christian, editor The Grievous Angel zine

Halpin takes a new spin on the creepy religious cult and amps the terror factor up to eleven! Not only is the Cult of Eden like no group you’ve ever seen before, but the Battese family is thrown into a bizarre and complex plan to effectively undo all of creation. This stellar freshman novel from Bill Halpin has me on the edge of my seat waiting for the next instalment!  Kathleen from Belle of the Bookcase

The Cult of Eden is one of those books that tricks you into thinking it’s going one way and then, BAM! It switches gear and takes you on an even crazier journey. The things the author puts these characters through should be illegal, even in a book! I’m looking forward to seeing what else he can come up with in the future, too! Armand Rosamilia, author of the Dying Days zombie series

The Cult of Eden is a stellar debut novel. A kaleidoscope of religious undertones and occult sprinklings not seen since The Exorcist. I’m a Bill Halpin fan! Chuck Buda, author of Curse of the Ancients and The First Cut

Written like this was Halpin’s 20th novel, I was quite impressed to learn it was only the first! The characters were well developed and that story was beyond anything that I could imagine.

A big thank you to Netgally, John Hunt Publishing Ltd, Cosmic Egg Books, and Bill Halpin for the ARC of this read! It was truly a great find and I’m so happy to have picked it up and see such a refreshing plot.

My Review

If you were looking for a book that you could not figure out until the end, this one is it!

I loved the writing, told from two points of view, both in the past and present times you get a real feel for both Helena and Ashley. That being said, both characters were a little less than stellar and I found it hard to like either one. Expect for the fact that Helena is a tad more likable than Ashley for obvious reasons (you have to read it to find out what I mean).

Uncovering the emotions I think all women feel at some point in their lives, feeling forced to choose between career and family, often having to sacrifice one for the other. The Rival stirs up emotions over motherhood, friendship and even family. The question that lingers is when we only see things from our perspective, how can we trust that its real? That it’s not paranoia or insecurity?

We can only do the very best we can and at the end of the day, give yourself and others the benefit of the doubt. Not always and not in every situation, but when the situation warrants, do the best you can to go easy!

Watching You by Lisa Jewell #READING #BOOKREVIEW

Description

IN THIS EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT, GET A SNEAK PREVIEW OF THE LATEST HEARTPOUNDING THRILLER FROM THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES AND #1 SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THEN SHE WAS GONE.

Melville Heights is one of the nicest neighborhoods in Bristol, England; home to doctors and lawyers and old-money academics. It’s not the sort of place where people are brutally murdered in their own kitchens. But it is the sort of place where everyone has a secret. And everyone is watching you.

As the headmaster credited with turning around the local school, Tom Fitzwilliam is beloved by one and all—including Joey Mullen, his new neighbor, who quickly develops an intense infatuation with this thoroughly charming yet unavailable man. Joey thinks her crush is a secret, but Tom’s teenaged son Freddie—a prodigy with aspirations of becoming a spy for MI5—excels in observing people and has witnessed Joey behaving strangely around his father.

One of Tom’s students, Jenna Tripp, also lives on the same street, and she’s not convinced her teacher is as squeaky clean as he seems. For one thing, he has taken a particular liking to her best friend and fellow classmate, and Jenna’s mother—whose mental health has admittedly been deteriorating in recent years—is convinced that Mr. Fitzwilliam is stalking her.

Meanwhile, twenty years earlier, a schoolgirl writes in her diary, charting her doomed obsession with a handsome young English teacher named Mr. Fitzwilliam…

In Lisa Jewell’s latest brilliant “bone-chilling suspense” (People) no one is who they seem—and everyone is hiding something. Who has been murdered—and who would have wanted one of their neighbors dead? As “Jewell teases out her twisty plot at just the right pace” (Booklist, starred review), you will be kept guessing until the startling revelation on the very last page.

“This compulsive, propulsive novel is both a seize-you-by-the-throat thriller and a genuinely moving family drama. Stellar.”

My Review

I’ve been enjoying Lisa’s writing for a long time now. Each one of her stories is different than the last and if you think you’ll be able to figure things out before it’s revealed, you have another thing coming!

She has a way of joining you to her story, engrossing you and totally consuming you with her words. All so carefully chosen that I wonder how she develops a story – does it just come to her or is it planned out and outlined? The reason I ask, is because it seems like she must sculpt it from end to beginning in order top include ever single detail that ties it altogether.

If you haven’t read her writing before, I implore you to start today!

“A haunting, atmospheric, stay-up-way-too-late read.” —Megan Miranda, New York Times bestselling author

From the New York Times bestselling author of Then She Was Gone comes another page-turning look inside one family’s past as buried secrets threaten to come to light.

Be careful who you let in.

Soon after her twenty-fifth birthday, Libby Jones returns home from work to find the letter she’s been waiting for her entire life. She rips it open with one driving thought: I am finally going to know who I am.

She soon learns not only the identity of her birth parents, but also that she is the sole inheritor of their abandoned mansion on the banks of the Thames in London’s fashionable Chelsea neighborhood, worth millions. Everything in Libby’s life is about to change. But what she can’t possibly know is that others have been waiting for this day as well—and she is on a collision course to meet them.

Twenty-five years ago, police were called to 16 Cheyne Walk with reports of a baby crying. When they arrived, they found a healthy ten-month-old happily cooing in her crib in the bedroom. Downstairs in the kitchen lay three dead bodies, all dressed in black, next to a hastily scrawled note. And the four other children reported to live at Cheyne Walk were gone.

In The Family Upstairs, the master of “bone-chilling suspense” (People) brings us the can’t-look-away story of three entangled families living in a house with the darkest of secrets.

“Your hands quake. Your breath fades. Your heart wallops your ribs. Medical emergency or Lisa Jewell novel? Few writers of psychological suspense devise such swift, slippery plots; fewer still people their stories with characters so human and complex. The Family Upstairs glitters like a blade and cuts even deeper.” —A. J. Finn, New York Times bestselling author of The Woman in the Window

“A haunting, atmospheric, stay-up-way-too-late read. I was desperate to uncover all the twisting mysteries inside The Family Upstairs, layer by tangled layer. Eerie, suspenseful, and completely consuming.” —Megan Miranda, New York Times bestselling author of All the Missing Girls

“I’ve just raced through the brilliantly dark and disturbing The Family Upstairs. Absolutely couldn’t put it down, it’s so good!” —B. A. Paris, New York Times bestselling author of Behind Closed Doors

“I’m a big fan of Lisa’s books and had hoped to save it for my holiday next week, but failed miserably by devouring The Family Upstairs as soon as it arrived. I was hooked from the first page, I think it’s her best yet and hands down my favourite book so far this year.” —Alice Feeney, New York Times bestselling author of Sometimes I Lie

“Absolutely brilliant. Great characterisation, a fascinating and dark set up and a great conclusion. She’s always great but this is next level stuff.” —Sarah Pinborough, New York Times bestselling author of Behind Her Eyes

“The perfect poolside read. The perfect anywhere read, tbh. This book is riveting, moving, and out in August. Highest possible level of recommendation.” —Sophie Hannah, New York Times bestselling author

“A twisty and engrossing story of betrayal and redemption. Reminiscent of Donna Tartt in scope and quality.” —Ian Rankin, New York Times bestselling author

My Review

Wow, wow, WOW!

Told from three point of views weaving the past and the present together until it all comes together, makes this book one of my favorites. And I’ll be honest, when I first picked it up, it was hard to get into because every turn of the page into the next chapter brought a fresh perspective but was a little hard to understand…until it all of sudden and yet very slowly it all comes together.

I’m suffering a little bit of sadness now that it’s over. So brilliantly written by one of my favorite authors!

The Beloveds by Maureen Lindley

Description

An exploration of domestic derangement, as sinister as Daphne Du Maurier’s classic Rebecca, that plumbs the depths of sibling rivalry with wit and menace.

Oh, to be a Beloved—one of those lucky people for whom nothing ever goes wrong. Everything falls into their laps without effort: happiness, beauty, good fortune, allure.

Betty Stash is not a Beloved—but her little sister, the delightful Gloria, is. She’s the one with the golden curls and sunny disposition and captivating smile, the one whose best friend used to be Betty’s, the one whose husband should have been Betty’s. And then, to everyone’s surprise, Gloria inherits the family manse—a vast, gorgeous pile of ancient stone, imposing timbers, and lush gardens—that was never meant to be hers.

Losing what Betty considers her rightful inheritance is the final indignity. As she single-mindedly pursues her plan to see the estate returned to her in all its glory, her determined and increasingly unhinged behavior—aided by poisonous mushrooms, talking walls, and a phantom dog—escalates to the point of no return. The Beloveds will have you wondering if there’s a length to which an envious sister won’t go.

My Review

⭐⭐⭐⭐

What a crazy, dark and twisted book this was! It’s not hard to get lost in the darkness that is Betty Stash.

Proving that our own perceptions shapes us and our actions, Betty creates an almost alternate dimension in which she’s convinced herself of all of the things she is not. Most importantly, that she’s not a Beloved. Luck doesn’t shine on her and or she believes.

What is it that makes her less deserving than her sister, is it something real or something that’s she’s conjured in her mind?

I can’t say I was super glued to the story, it’s hard to go that deep in one sitting and to be honest, Betty’s mind is a place no one should spend a considerable amount of time in.

Paranoia, I think affects all of us at some point during our lives. Whether the threat is real or not is debatable because as long as someone feels that way, it is real to them. I find that thoughts like this often stem from either not enough activity or simply that we think people care way more than they actually do.

The Splendor of Fear by Ambrose Ibsen

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Something stirs in the town of Newsom’s Landing…
Penny hates the outdoors, but when her boyfriend, Jared, plans a romantic weekend getaway in the woods, she decides to tag along.

The pair drive to a remote Kentucky campground with a strange and sordid history. Within the confines of the Swan Creek State Park are the ruins of a town abandoned under terrifying circumstances in the 19th century. The town of Newsom’s Landing had been the site of the last-known witch trial in US history, and the ghost of its defendant, the infamous Ellie Pomeroy, is said to still linger.

Arriving on the anniversary of Pomeroy’s murder, the pair find they have the entire park to themselves.

Or, nearly

Something else is stalking the woods—watching in the night, wandering through the ruins. It brings a plague of hallucinatory terror wherever it goes, and before long, Penny and Jared can’t parse reality from nightmare.

Lost in the woods, the pair are faced with a choice: Find a way to end the century-long curse, or be consumed by it—body and soul.

The Splendor of Fear is a full-length novel of terror by Ambrose Ibsen.

My Review

I’ve read a few books written by Ambrose Ibsen and I’m never disappointed! Somehow he makes the horror of an idyllic situation so disturbing that you’ll be sleeping with the lights on!

The Splendid Fear was fantastic in so many ways. First of all, the descriptiveness of the scenes could be felt off the page. All while Penny was running in fear, I felt like I was running along side her, experiencing the same emotions and physical reactions that she did.

I can’t give it away but I will tell you this, the story itself reminds me of a traditional ghost story, but the details that are sprinkled through-out, including the intense details that are more better than anything I’ve read previously.

That being said, there were a few details that I wondered about after finishing up that were left to hang. Like Jared’s watch; Penny found it in the destroyed camp but she never asked him about it afterwards. The fact that she picked it up made me think it was more than a hallucination and that something more should have come from that find.

The Other Mrs. by Mary Kubica

Description

“Kubica ratchets up tension and intrigue in The Other Mrs. Her salacious, thoroughly mysterious characters bear the qualities we all crave in a thriller—seductive, seemingly unknowable, and altogether unpredictable.” —Karin Slaughter, New York Times bestselling author of The Last Widow

Hypnotic and addictive and perfect for fans of
You, The Other Mrs. is the twisty new psychological thriller from Mary Kubica, the blockbuster bestselling author of The Good Girl

Sadie and Will Foust have only just moved their family from bustling Chicago to small-town Maine when their neighbor, Morgan Baines, is found dead in her home. The murder rocks their tiny coastal island, but no one is more shaken than Sadie, who is terrified by the thought of a killer in her very own backyard.

But it’s not just Morgan’s death that has Sadie on edge. It’s their eerie old home, with its decrepit decor and creepy attic, which they inherited from Will’s sister after she died unexpectedly. It’s Will’s disturbed teenage niece Imogen, with her dark and threatening presence. And it’s the troubling past that continues to wear at the seams of their family.

As the eyes of suspicion turn toward the new family in town, Sadie is drawn deeper into the mystery of Morgan’s death. But Sadie must be careful, for the more she discovers about Mrs. Baines, the more she begins to realize just how much she has to lose if the truth ever comes to light.

“Brilliant! An utterly absorbing tale of deception and subterfuge. Kubica is a master of sleight of hand. Absolutely loved it!” —Liv Constantine, bestselling author of The Last Mrs. Parrish and The Last Time I Saw You

“In The Other Mrs., Mary Kubica weaves a labyrinth of deception and family secrets, each one more shocking than the last, with an ending that left me thunderstruck. If you have any doubts Mary Kubica is a master of the genre, this book will change your mind.” —Samantha Downing, bestselling author of My Lovely Wife

THE OTHER MRS. is Mary Kubica’s best book yet—which is saying a lot! I tore through the twisty, spine-tinglingly creepy pages.” —Sarah Pekkanen, #1 New York Times bestselling co-author of An Anonymous Girl

“Brilliantly propulsive and engrossing, with characters you’ll really care about and twists you won’t see coming, THE OTHER MRS is that rare thing: a thriller with heart.” —JP Delaney, New York Times bestselling author of The Girl Before

My Review

Let me start by saying that this is not going to be what you thought! Like every other mystery-reader out there, I think I have a good handle on the story, like I’ve figured it out way before anything gets uncovered, but not with this one.

I can’t give away anything or say too much because this book is one you’ll want to read for yourself. I couldn’t get it out of my head and every free chance I got, I had my kindle open to read just a few more words.

Sadie who, I promise you will grow to love while at the same time wonder why she can’t get it together enough to figure out what’s happening around her. Yes, she’s in trouble and descending quickly into the dark abyss of paranoia but you’ll root for her to come out on top even when you suspect the worst from her.

Once the plat revealed itself to me, my jaw dropped, because even though I sort of suspected what was coming, I had not idea to what extent it would be and I was pleasantly surprised at the twist. It literally took my breath away!

*****WARNING***** This book contains major triggers that some might find offensive. If you have abuse triggers, please do not purchase this book. It is not for the faint of heart.

****Note from the author**** If you are gracious enough to leave a review, I ask that you please not leave spoilers that will ruin it for others.

My Review

Once I got started, I couldn’t put it down. I won’t give away any spoilers but I will tell you that if you suffer from a weak stomach, this may not be the book for you.

I had a hard time with some of the details but the story pulled me in enough to where I needed to find out what happened and what was going to happen.

Elle, an abused woman finds friendship and a protector in the new detective in town. While investigating her father, Evan tried his best to do the right thing by Elle and tried to protect her as much as he could all while searching for an evil man with a group of powerful and wicked men behind him.

I wish that there was a little more detail given about some of Elle’s history but enough was revealed to divulge important tidbits along the way. There’s even a second book on the way which should open the door to more reveals later on.

I will definitely be picking the next one up and can’t to find out what happens to Evan and Elle… there’s sure to be some big twists ahead!

Two women, one love, and a curse lurking in deep, dark waters

For as long as she can remember, Maris Heilen has been haunted by dreams of a beautiful woman beckoning to her from beneath the water. These dreams have been Maris’s only constant. She’s lived her life like a leaf caught in the rushing tide: no rules, no commitments, and no long-term lovers, either—just a string of broken hearts that have tried to anchor her unwilling heart to the earth. When her dreams take on a new sense of urgency following the mysterious death of her estranged father, Maris knows it’s time to uproot and keep moving, her soul pulled to the west, toward the water—toward her.

Instead Maris finds herself drawn to a surreal little town high in the Colorado mountains, where she begins to believe her dream might be much closer to reality than she’d ever imagined. When she discovers her past is linked to a legend even more haunting than her dreams—and that the woman in them is not only real but in danger of being lost to an unfathomable darkness—Maris resolves to outshine the evil that has crept into a small corner of a forgotten forest in Havenwood Falls.

Title: Dead and Gone

Author: Jennifer Rebecca

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Release Day: March 11th

Cover by Alyssa Garcia at Uplifting Designs.

About Dead and Gone:

You ever have an out of body experience? Like one of those moments where you’re standing on a street corner watching yourself do something monumentally stupid? Something you know you shouldn’t do but you just can’t help yourself?

Three weeks ago, Trent and I were deep into the Honeymoon stage of love, I swore I wouldn’t be the first one to rock the boat—Lord knows with our two Irish tempers it would happen soon enough—so when he made me promise to keep my nose and our grandmothers out of his investigation, I did.

It didn’t hurt that his head was buried between my legs at the time either. But then Daisy called me begging for help and what kind of bestie would I be if I shut the door in her face? That’s right, a sh*tty one. So I packed up our grandmothers and their gogo boots, g-strings and pasties to get to the bottom of things. Only problem is if Trent catches us I’ll be dead meat, folks.

My name is Shelby Whitmore, Funeral and Obituaries columnist for the San Diego Metro News and most likely to be single again if I survive this sh*t. But hey, at least I’m still a hit with the blue hairs . . .

I’m dead meat. Literally. Dead. Meat.

Last month, when Trent and I started up again, I promised him that I wouldn’t do anything crazy. I wouldn’t go off half cocked. And most importantly, I wouldn’t follow our grandmothers down the crazy assed rabbit hole of Granny Grabbers and Dangerous Dames.

“You’re not police officers,” he had said.

And I agreed. We’re not.

Trent also might have coerced me into agreeing with him in the most despicable ways. One minute my legs are wrapped around his neck and my eyes are rolled back in my head and I’m one more “Oh, yes,” away from the promised land.

“Shell,” he said to me in between licks and kisses. “Promise me you won’t do anything crazy.” He kissed me again and again.

“Yes,” I ignored him as I rocked against his mouth moving closer and closer.

“Promise,” he commanded as I spiraled closer and closer to the edge.

“Yes!” I cried.

“You promise?” He asked me again but I was too far gone.

“Sweet Petunia, yes!”

“I’m so glad we agree. You have no idea how happy this makes me, Shelby.” Trent smiled as he slithered up my body like the snake that he is.

Although, I had an idea how happy my climax had made him as it was currently poking me in the thigh. Before I had a chance to catch my breath or even question what, exactly, Trent and I agreed on, he slid all the way inside me to the hilt and my eyes rolled back in my head.

*****

As It turned out, we had allegedly agreed that I wouldn’t go on any more cappers with my friend, Daisy, the retired hooker, and our grandmothers. Sophia was out, she was at some big, fancy figure skating competition in Chicago.

I still agreed. I mean, what kind of trouble could two widowed senior citizens, a retired hooker, and an obituaries columnist for the local paper get into. I mean really. Lightning doesn’t strike twice. It doesn’t, right?

And Trent and I had worked out some kinks. He yelled less. I pretended to listen more. And when I didn’t he used his handsome mouth in better ways than yelling if you catch my drift. We were officially in the love bubble. The honeymoon stage. I wasn’t ready to rock the boat for just anything all willy nilly.

But Daisy, my sweet, fabulous, eccentrically dressed best friend had a problem. Several of her . . . ummm . . . colleaguesfrom the old days were missing. Like really missing, not shacked up with a John. And she was worried. Yes, my sweet friend, Daisy, had a problem and she came to me for help, advice, I don’t really know what. All I know is that led me to today as I sit, handcuffed to the pipes of a bathroom sink in a filthy motel just this side of Mexico, dressed like a cheap hooker. Yep, I’m in trouble, folks. Just like I said . . . Dead. Meat. My name is Shelby Whitmore, funeral and obituaries columnist for the San Diego Metro News and most likely to be single again if I survive this shit. I guess I should start at the beginning . . .

While the kids were held captive by one of the men donning a heavy tan fire suit, Ali felt someone come stand beside her. She glanced to her right and found Kellen. He seemed much bigger, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with her, than he had the other day. Ali wouldn’t consider herself short, and he still had at least six inches on her.

“You doin’ okay?” he whispered, keeping his eyes trained forward.

“Aces. Why do you ask?”

“Oh, I don’t know. Could have something to do with the pale skin and choppy breathing. Or maybe it’s the way you’re swaying on your feet.”

Crap.

She hadn’t thought it was so noticeable.

She caught the eye of one of her students who’d turned to talk to the boy next to him and motioned for him to be quiet and pay attention before she whispered back, barely moving her lips, “Occupational hazard. I’m fine.”

“Of course you are, but why don’t you have a seat before you fall over?”

Ali gritted her teeth. More than a little annoyed that he’d noticed. Annoyed that she felt like crap. Annoyed that he’d ordered her around. And annoyed that the pills were barely keeping her on her feet. “I said, I’m fine.”

“Whatever you say, Ali Cat.”

“Excuse me? Did you just call me an alley cat?”

When he didn’t respond, she glanced up at him and found him completely relaxed, calmly watching the firemen who began taking questions from the kids.

That only annoyed her further.

“You know, in polite society, people don’t go around pointing out how crappy someone else looks.”

“And, if you’d retract your claws a little, you’d realize I never said you looked crappy. I was simply asking if you were feeling okay.”

Double crap.

Ali closed her eyes.

He was right, and she was being a bitch again.

She had ninety more minutes before she could head home and quarantine herself—and her bitchiness—in a hot bath where she couldn’t infect anyone else.

But there was something she needed to do first.

“I’m sorry.”

“Accepted,” Kellen easily returned.

“No, not just for today,” she continued. “For last week in front of the diner. I was snippy that day, too, and you didn’t deserve it then any more than you deserve it now.”

“Has everyone been graced with your sunny demeanor lately, or am I just that lucky?”

She huffed out a surprised laugh. “You’ve been luckier than most.”

“Any particular reason?”

None that she was going to share. “Luck of the draw, I guess.”

“Fair enough.”

“And I appreciate your concern. Thank you for checking on me.”

See, I can be nice.
