Snow Creek by Gregg Olsen

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Description

Footprints were scattered about like fallen leaves. She looked down into the ravine, and once more her lungs filled with fear. A body, blackened and motionless lay splayed out in the bushes.

Detective Megan Carpenter is no stranger to evil. Escaping the horrors of her old life, she’s vowed never to let anyone hurt her or those she loves ever again. Joining the small police force in Jefferson County’s Port Townsend, Megan is determined to get every victim of a crime the justice they deserve.

So when Ruth Turner walks into the Sheriff’s office claiming her sister Ida Watson has been missing for over a month, Megan’s instincts tell her that she needs to do more than just file a report.

Arriving at a secluded farmhouse in the hills above Snow Creek, she finds Ida’s teenage children alone and frightened.

Then a few days later, close to the Watsons’ home, the blackened body of a woman is discovered in an abandoned pickup truck.

Megan must unravel the disturbing secrets of the isolated Snow Creek community if she is to catch the killer.

But Megan has dark secrets of her own too…

Hidden in the back of her closet is a box of tapes containing every single recording of her therapy sessions with Doctor Albright over thirteen years ago. As Megan begins to play the tapes, she’s taken straight back to her terrifying childhood, back to the time she was a kid called Rylee, fighting to survive.

Can Megan finally confront the past she’s spent years trying to block out and will listening to her own painful story help her solve the complex case she is now entangled in?

From the Number One New York Times and Amazon Charts bestselling author, comes an absolutely heart-stopping and completely unputdownable crime series, introducing Detective Megan Carpenter.

My Review

This isn’t the first Gregg Olsen book I’ve read, nor do I think it will be the last. It’s one of those stories that set you out thinking you’re reading one story while wondering how the pieces will fit only to read on in shock as it all comes together perfectly.

This one had more than one villain making it hard to determine who did what and why. I can’t give anything away here but can offer this piece of advice – don’t count anybody out!

Even when you’re sure you how will unfold, I can promise you that this tale will only grab a hold tighter while keep turning the pages for more!

Description

A speculative thriller in the vein of The Handmaid’s Tale and The Power. Optioned by Universal and Elizabeth Banks to be a major motion picture!

“A visceral, darkly haunting fever dream of a novel and an absolute page-turner. Liggett’s deeply suspenseful book brilliantly explores the high cost of a misogynistic world that denies women power and does it with a heart-in-your-throat, action-driven story that’s equal parts horror-laden fairy tale, survival story, romance, and resistance manifesto. I couldn’t stop reading.” – Libba Bray, New York Times bestselling author

Survive the year.

No one speaks of the grace year. It’s forbidden.

In Garner County, girls are told they have the power to lure grown men from their beds, to drive women mad with jealousy. They believe their very skin emits a powerful aphrodisiac, the potent essence of youth, of a girl on the edge of womanhood. That’s why they’re banished for their sixteenth year, to release their magic into the wild so they can return purified and ready for marriage. But not all of them will make it home alive.

Sixteen-year-old Tierney James dreams of a better life—a society that doesn’t pit friend against friend or woman against woman, but as her own grace year draws near, she quickly realizes that it’s not just the brutal elements they must fear. It’s not even the poachers in the woods, men who are waiting for a chance to grab one of the girls in order to make a fortune on the black market. Their greatest threat may very well be each other.

With sharp prose and gritty realism, The Grace Year examines the complex and sometimes twisted relationships between girls, the women they eventually become, and the difficult decisions they make in-between

#TBR Week of October 7th – Blogtober Post

Whew! This post a day for the month is a little more challenging than I thought and it’s only the 7th!

As you know, I usually post when I’ve finished a book and am adding there review, unless I’m sharing an announcement or new release details, so my blogging schedule basically doesn’t exist. I don’t even have one…I’d like to be that organized but between family time, full-time and part-time work with a little me time, doesn’t leave a whole lot on the clock in a day to post everyday or work on a blogging schedule for that matter.

That being said, it’s not that I couldn’t find the time, after all a lot of what we spend our time on in a day is choice and let’s face it, we can all be making better choices in that department. Especially with all the social media platforms nowadays.

Signing up to be part of Blogtober is hopefully going to give me the push I need to get on schedule, add a little more structure to my posting times and follow up on engagement more that I do. So far so good…

Without further or due…here’s what’s on my list this week

My Review

Ah, the good old fashioned rumor mill…It’s funny that as far as we’ve come in society, we still subscribe to the local and even international gossip chain. Even when you’ve been a victim of a story gone wrong and told out of context, I bet when presented with it about someone else, you’ll take the bait.

We can’t always believe everything we hear, in fact, don’t believe unless you’ve lived it, were there and witnessed the events unfold. If we stuck to that, we wouldn’t have a chance to get involved directly or indirectly.

That’s what happens in this plot. The twists and turns are quite surprising and I found myself really feeling for Sally. Trying to make her life better and get one with things, she’s brought down by someone who doesn’t even know what’s she’s talking about.

I can’t give away any details as you’re well aware, but I can tell you that this book was not only surprising but enthralling too! I couldn’t put it down.

My Review

Can you imagine waking up after a car accident involving you and your child? No, how about if there was another mystery child who was also in the car on impact?

I know, right? This kind of story can’t be ignored and I was hooked right after reading the quick summary. Running from a traumatic and turbulent childhood, Holly finds happiness in her adult life with a nice husband, a job she loves and her own family where she’s not fearful of what the next day would hold or what people’s true motives are. She know the little family she’s worked so hard for is what she’s always needed. Unconditional love without schemes and crime in the mix.

I can’t give anything away, other than tell you a surprise awaits you. Does Holly get what she wants in the end? And if so, what is it that she REALLY craves.

“This is a well-plotted cozy mystery, and you do a great job casting plausible suspicion on all of the main characters so that the big reveal during the climax is satisfyingly unexpected and exciting.” -Amazon Kindle Scout Editorial Review 2018

My Review

Thanks to Netgalley, Raven McKray and BooksGoSocial, I was able to read the ARC of this book prior to release day and being that it’s the first in the series, I was eager to see what this mystery was all about in hopes I’d have a new series on my hands just in time for the chilly weather.

I wasn’t disappointed at all! With a little added romance this mystery gave me all the feels! Written like the classic crime novel of who-dun-it, I not only liked the characters but became part of the story wanting to get out my magnifying glass like Sherlock to help solve the mystery.

I’m excited for what’s next for Maddie and can’t wait to see what Raven has got in store for us!

My Review

If you were looking for a book that you could not figure out until the end, this one is it!

I loved the writing, told from two points of view, both in the past and present times you get a real feel for both Helena and Ashley. That being said, both characters were a little less than stellar and I found it hard to like either one. Expect for the fact that Helena is a tad more likable than Ashley for obvious reasons (you have to read it to find out what I mean).

Uncovering the emotions I think all women feel at some point in their lives, feeling forced to choose between career and family, often having to sacrifice one for the other. The Rival stirs up emotions over motherhood, friendship and even family. The question that lingers is when we only see things from our perspective, how can we trust that its real? That it’s not paranoia or insecurity?

We can only do the very best we can and at the end of the day, give yourself and others the benefit of the doubt. Not always and not in every situation, but when the situation warrants, do the best you can to go easy!

What’s Left of Me Is Yours

April,2020

A Novel

by Stephanie Scott

Description

A gripping debut set in modern-day Tokyo and inspired by a true crime, for readers of Everything I Never Told You and The Perfect NannyWhat’s Left of Me Is Yours charts a young woman’s search for the truth about her mother’s life–and her murder.

In Japan, a covert industry has grown up around the “wakaresaseya” (literally “breaker-upper”), a person hired by one spouse to seduce the other in order to gain the advantage in divorce proceedings. When Satō hires Kaitarō, a wakaresaseya agent, to have an affair with his wife, Rina, he assumes it will be an easy case. But Satō has never truly understood Rina or her desires and Kaitarō’s job is to do exactly that–until he does it too well. While Rina remains ignorant of the circumstances that brought them together, she and Kaitarō fall in a desperate, singular love, setting in motion a series of violent acts that will forever haunt her daughter’s life.

Told from alternating points of view and across the breathtaking landscapes of Japan, Stephanie Scott exquisitely renders the affair and its intricate repercussions. As Rina’s daughter, Sumiko, fills in the gaps of her mother’s story and her own memory, Scott probes the thorny psychological and moral grounds of the actions we take in the name of love, asking where we draw the line between passion and possession.

The Beloveds by Maureen Lindley

Description

An exploration of domestic derangement, as sinister as Daphne Du Maurier’s classic Rebecca, that plumbs the depths of sibling rivalry with wit and menace.

Oh, to be a Beloved—one of those lucky people for whom nothing ever goes wrong. Everything falls into their laps without effort: happiness, beauty, good fortune, allure.

Betty Stash is not a Beloved—but her little sister, the delightful Gloria, is. She’s the one with the golden curls and sunny disposition and captivating smile, the one whose best friend used to be Betty’s, the one whose husband should have been Betty’s. And then, to everyone’s surprise, Gloria inherits the family manse—a vast, gorgeous pile of ancient stone, imposing timbers, and lush gardens—that was never meant to be hers.

Losing what Betty considers her rightful inheritance is the final indignity. As she single-mindedly pursues her plan to see the estate returned to her in all its glory, her determined and increasingly unhinged behavior—aided by poisonous mushrooms, talking walls, and a phantom dog—escalates to the point of no return. The Beloveds will have you wondering if there’s a length to which an envious sister won’t go.

My Review

⭐⭐⭐⭐

What a crazy, dark and twisted book this was! It’s not hard to get lost in the darkness that is Betty Stash.

Proving that our own perceptions shapes us and our actions, Betty creates an almost alternate dimension in which she’s convinced herself of all of the things she is not. Most importantly, that she’s not a Beloved. Luck doesn’t shine on her and or she believes.

What is it that makes her less deserving than her sister, is it something real or something that’s she’s conjured in her mind?

I can’t say I was super glued to the story, it’s hard to go that deep in one sitting and to be honest, Betty’s mind is a place no one should spend a considerable amount of time in.

Paranoia, I think affects all of us at some point during our lives. Whether the threat is real or not is debatable because as long as someone feels that way, it is real to them. I find that thoughts like this often stem from either not enough activity or simply that we think people care way more than they actually do.

The Widow of Pale Harbor

by Hester Fox

Description

A town gripped by fear. A woman accused of witchcraft. Who can save Pale Harbor from itself?

Maine, 1846. Gabriel Stone is desperate to escape the ghosts that haunt him in Massachusetts after his wife’s death, so he moves to Maine, taking a position as a minister in the remote village of Pale Harbor.

But not all is as it seems in the sleepy town. Strange, unsettling things have been happening, and the townspeople claim that only one person can be responsible: Sophronia Carver, a reclusive widow who lives with a spinster maid in the eerie Castle Carver. Sophronia must be a witch, and she almost certainly killed her husband.

As the incidents escalate, one thing becomes clear: they are the work of a twisted person inspired by the wildly popular stories of Mr. Edgar Allan Poe. And Gabriel must find answers, or Pale Harbor will suffer a fate worthy of Poe’s darkest tales.

Hester Fox comes to writing from a background in the museum field as a collections maintenance technician. This job has taken her from historic houses to fine art museums, where she has the privilege of cleaning and caring for collections that range from paintings by old masters to ancient artifacts to early-American furniture. She is a keen painter and has a master’s degree in historical archaeology, as well as a background in medieval studies and art history. Hester lives outside Boston with her husband.

Be careful of the dark, dark wood…

Especially the woods surrounding the town of Fir Haven. Some say these woods are magical. Haunted, even. Rumored to be a witch, only Nora Walker knows the truth. She and the Walker women before her have always shared a special connection with the woods. And it’s this special connection that leads Nora to Oliver Huntsman—the same boy who disappeared from the Camp for Wayward Boys weeks ago—and in the middle of the worst snowstorm in years. He should be dead, but here he is alive, and left in the woods with no memory of the time he’d been missing.

But Nora can feel an uneasy shift in the woods at Oliver’s presence. And it’s not too long after that Nora realizes she has no choice but to unearth the truth behind how the boy she has come to care so deeply about survived his time in the forest, and what led him there in the first place. What Nora doesn’t know, though, is that Oliver has secrets of his own—secrets he’ll do anything to keep buried, because as it turns out, he wasn’t the only one to have gone missing on that fateful night all those weeks ago.

For as long as there have been fairy tales, we have been warned to fear what lies within the dark, dark woods and in Winterwood, New York Times bestselling author Shea Ernshaw, shows us why.

Hypnotic and addictive and perfect for fans of
You, The Other Mrs. is the twisty new psychological thriller from Mary Kubica, the blockbuster bestselling author of The Good Girl

Sadie and Will Foust have only just moved their family from bustling Chicago to small-town Maine when their neighbor, Morgan Baines, is found dead in her home. The murder rocks their tiny coastal island, but no one is more shaken than Sadie, who is terrified by the thought of a killer in her very own backyard.

But it’s not just Morgan’s death that has Sadie on edge. It’s their eerie old home, with its decrepit decor and creepy attic, which they inherited from Will’s sister after she died unexpectedly. It’s Will’s disturbed teenage niece Imogen, with her dark and threatening presence. And it’s the troubling past that continues to wear at the seams of their family.

As the eyes of suspicion turn toward the new family in town, Sadie is drawn deeper into the mystery of Morgan’s death. But Sadie must be careful, for the more she discovers about Mrs. Baines, the more she begins to realize just how much she has to lose if the truth ever comes to light.

“Brilliantly propulsive and engrossing, with characters you’ll really care about and twists you won’t see coming, THE OTHER MRS is that rare thing: a thriller with heart.” —JP Delaney, New York Times bestselling author of The Girl Before

My Review

Let me start by saying that this is not going to be what you thought! Like every other mystery-reader out there, I think I have a good handle on the story, like I’ve figured it out way before anything gets uncovered, but not with this one.

I can’t give away anything or say too much because this book is one you’ll want to read for yourself. I couldn’t get it out of my head and every free chance I got, I had my kindle open to read just a few more words.

Sadie who, I promise you will grow to love while at the same time wonder why she can’t get it together enough to figure out what’s happening around her. Yes, she’s in trouble and descending quickly into the dark abyss of paranoia but you’ll root for her to come out on top even when you suspect the worst from her.

Once the plat revealed itself to me, my jaw dropped, because even though I sort of suspected what was coming, I had not idea to what extent it would be and I was pleasantly surprised at the twist. It literally took my breath away!

“The Girl on the Porch” by Richard Chizmar

Description

“Chizmar’s great gift is that he knows the people on your block—and he knows their darkest secrets. This guy is gold.” —Stephen King

“For some, the impulse lives closer to the surface and instead of fighting it, they embrace it. The worst of them, the truly evil, listen for it…that tantalizing, deceitful voice from somewhere underneath it all.”

From New York Times bestseller Richard Chizmar, author of Gwendy’s Button Box (with Stephen King) and The Long Way Home, comes a thriller that will forever change the way you look at your neighbors and best friends…

When the Tuckers’ next door neighbor mentions someone rang their doorbell late the previous night, Sarah and Kenny Tucker check their home’s security camera and discover something shocking: the doorbell ringer also visited their house and it wasn’t a teenager playing a prank, but instead a terrified young woman with a shackle hanging from her right wrist. She anxiously pressed the doorbell again and again, glancing over her shoulder as if someone was coming for her, before giving up and taking off into the dark.

Almost overnight, she becomes known as The Girl on the Porch—and she’s everywhere. There are updates on all the local networks, national coverage on CNN and Fox News, and the video goes viral on social media. Before long, everyone has seen the harrowing security camera footage.

Kenny and Sarah figure it’s only a matter of time before someone recognizes the woman, but as the days pass and no one comes forward, odd things begin to transpire around the Tucker family: a man intensely watches them at a restaurant and then vanishes, fresh footprints appear in the garden next to their house where no one should have been, a neighbor’s pet is viciously killed and mutilated, and a mysterious man has started following their daughter Natalie…

A rollercoaster ride of compelling twists and turns, The Girl on the Porch demonstrates why Stephen King says Richard Chizmar’s writing is “powerful” and Robert McCammon calls his work “hard-hitting, spooky, suspenseful, harrowing, and heartbreaking.”

Advance Praise

From Kirkus Reviews:
“A late-night visitor disturbs the peace in this spine-chilling novella from horror writer Chizmar (The Long Way Home, 2018, etc.)… Chizmar delivers some genuinely creepy moments, cleverly capitalizing on readers’ domestic insecurities…”

From Ridley Pearson:
“Chizmar’s The Girl on the Porch packs a punch. Doorbell videos. Teens. Spooky neighbors. And a mystery not boiling under the surface but blazing in front of your eyes. I read it in one sitting with sweaty palms—just like one of the suspects in the novel. This guy can write! I felt like I was sitting around a campfire hearing a story. One that wouldn’t let me sleep. One that would leave me pacing for hours afraid of the sound of my own footfalls.”

From Michael Koryta:
The Girl on the Porch is a thrilling, page-turning delight. Richard Chizmar’s voice is the magic; he pulls you in with the storytelling touch of an old friend, and this old friend takes you to some dark places. An all-too-plausible setup leads to an all-American nightmare. Don’t miss this one!”

From Caroline Kepnes, bestselling author of You:
The Girl on the Porch had me hooked on page one—I devoured it. Chizmar peels the band-aid so slowly that it hurts…taut, deftly paced …we are all potentially guilty and anyone might die at any moment.”

From Riley Sager, bestselling author of Final Girls:
“Creepy as hell! A tense and twisty read that poses this unsettling question: How well do we know our friends and neighbors? In Richard Chizmar’s world, the answer is more complicated—and frightening—than you think.”

From Linwood Barclay:
“If Chizmar’s goal here is to make you suspicious—and fearful—of everyone you know, including those closest to you, mission accomplished.”

From Bentley Little:
“With a pinch of Blue Velvet and a dash of The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street, Chizmar’s short sharp story of a terrified suburban neighborhood insightfully illuminates the fears and anxieties lying just beneath the surface of modern American life. The Girl on the Porch is a pitch perfect illustration of Hannah Arendt’s maxim about the banality of evil.”

My Review

A not-to-missed read as stated by the writing God himself, Stephen King. Of course, I couldn’t stay away from this one even though it’s a novella, which I typically don’t pick up, it had all the psychological elements needed to make it a great read. It was just over really quick!

Thank you to Netgalley, author Richard Chizmar and Subterranean Press for the advanced reader copy! It was a great addition to my #TBR stack for the long Labor Day Weekend!

Abduction by Gillian Jackson

But one little girl never returns.

Could Grace really have returned? And if she has, where was she taken…?

ABDUCTION is a page-turning kidnapping mystery which confronts every parent’s worst nightmare. This emotional psychological thriller will stay with you long after the pages have turned.

My Review

Aside from the poor editing the plot was fantastic, telling the story of an abduction and how it affects the family members who suffer in the aftermath for years and sometimes for the rest of their life.

With no closure the family, especially the siblings are on a constant hunt for their lost sister. No matter what the event, holiday party, business meeting with new colleagues, schools and even on TV, they’re always scanning for a glimpse of someone that could look like the missing child.

The story is heart-wrenching but with a happy ending that I won’t spoil, if not for the editing, I would have give this read 5 stars.

A really addictive plot, and so atmospheric. Clever and unexpected (S D Sykes, author of the Oswald de Lacy series)

‘A Tartan Noir tour de force. Lindsay writes with an economy and skill all too rare in modern fiction . . . Brilliant’ Tony Black, author of the DI Bob Valentine series.

My Review

I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into because there wasn’t much to go on in regards to a description, but I’m glad I went in blind anyway!

Spies and murder quickly become part of your world as you dragged into the story after only a few pages. I was quite intrigued my the storyline and even though it’s book #3 in the series, I didn’t feel like I missed out on anything!

If you’re looking for something to read this Labor Day weekend, this should be it! It’s hot off the press! 🙂

The Widow Next Door by by L.A. Detwiler

Description

A beautiful house. A new beginning. The almost perfect neighbours…

When newlyweds Jane and Alex Clarke move into an idyllic house on the quaint Bristol Lane, they are excited for a new beginning in what will be their ‘forever home’.

And when an elderly neighbour brings them a pie to welcome them, she soon becomes a friend. But she grows a little too interested in the couple next door as she sits watching them, day in, day out, from the rocking chair in her window.

Alex says it will be fine. After all, she’s a lonely widow who just wants some company. But when she invites Jane into her home, who knows what she’ll find there…

A dark and gripping domestic thriller, perfect for fans of Shari Lapena and Paula Hawkins.

My Review

I can’t say I’m a huge fan of this one, but it is the first thriller L.A. Detwiler has written so it deserves a chance.

The story itself had a good plot but the chapters seems to drone on and on without much happening aside from a few twists. Having being told from the Widow’s point of view, you never really get a good sense for her neighbors, the objects of her thoughts, Alex and Jane. Therefore, it’s hard to connect with them so there’s a lack of attachment to them which makes it hard to really care what’s real and what’s not.

Had it been a little faster paced, and left out the mundane details that had no reason for being there, I think this would be one hell of a book!

A Predator and a Psychopath by Jay Kerk

Description

Under the care of the facility’s doctors, he finds himself questioning what’s real, what’s not, and if he’ll ever make it out alive. Drawing inspiration from real cases, and with well-researched, realistic characters, A Predator and A Psychopath is a dark and twisted thriller that is not for the soft-hearted.

Advance Praise

Readers’ Favorite.

My Review

To say it’s a dark thriller is putting it mildly. Dealing with murder, forgotten events and a true psychopath who’s also a pedophile is too much for one book! That being said, aside from the graphic nature and subject in the book, I enjoyed the writing and got into the story.

It’s not for the faint of heart – that’s for sure!

Have you read….

Whickering Place by London Clarke

Description

In this gripping follow-up to The Meadows, a woman trapped by her own fears inherits a house haunted by a legacy of darkness and a history of ritual sacrifices.

A violent attack that happened nearly a decade ago has left twenty-seven-year-old Avery Tullinger barely able to walk outside. Following her estranged father’s death, she inherits Whickering Place, a historic mansion in Asheville, North Carolina, currently occupied by two tenants: Colin Gallagher, a young doctor, and his mysterious brother, Pearse. Soon after moving in, Avery learns that her father’s life in the house was consumed by the supernatural … and the activity appears to be starting again.

As paranormal events within the house escalate, so does Avery’s attraction for Pearse, even though Colin warns her that his younger brother is involved in a dangerous cult called The Colony. Faced with losing Whickering Place, her heart, and even her life, Avery is forced to make unimaginable choices. And as Whickering Place becomes the focal point for The Colony’s bloody rituals, the house’s dark history threatens to repeat itself.

At turns a novel of terror and a story of love, Whickering Place is a paranormal thriller of nonstop suspense about the risks of living and loving outside safe boundaries and the relationships that change, motivate, and sustain us.

Advance Praise

“This was a chilling story… For those who love the supernatural filled with demons and cults then this is the book for you.” —Paranormal Romance Guild

My Review

I can’t say enough great things about this book! First, I must admit that it’s not the first one of London’s that I’ve picked up and I haven’t regretted it once!

She’s a fresh author with special twist that gives her stories the perfect amount of mystery, paranormal a little horror which is often mixed with romance.

Whickering Place is the new home that Avery reluctantly moves to after her father commits suicide. Suffering with agoraphobia since witnessing the death of her boyfriend almost 10 years before.

I can’t give away too much, you’ll just have to read it to find out…but reveling in Avery’s newly found confidence and love will leave you breathless.

There were several points in the book where the action picked up and I was literally on the edge of my seat, hands frozen around my iPad for fear I’d miss something!
