The Darkness in Faith by Charity Rabbiosi – #BOOKREVIEW @NETGALLEY

I’m all for the dark and mysterious, but this was even a little much for me. I can normally get through most scenes with the knowledge that “this too shall pass”, but with so much depravity, I wasn’t sure when it would end.

That being said, I thought it was brilliant, a serial muerderess who is out for blood. Just be warned, if you think you’ve read it all, I promise you, you haven’t and definitely not all in one book!

Description

How can I admit that I’m falling for the one thing I fear the most?

My name is Faith: Tortured sex slave turned brutal serial killer. Men have abused my body for inhuman pleasures, hurt me and made me feel helpless. But now… They fear me.

I wish I could say that it’s purely for the good of the world that I kill them slowly and give them a taste of what they have made others feel, but that would be a lie. Turns out, I have a lust for blood and get off on making THEM my slave. They may be way past being offended at that point, but I sure enjoy my living dead boys.

Just one small problem. I am falling for my newest conquest and don’t know if I can kill him. He supposedly sexually assaulted a woman horribly ten years ago and is currently on parole for the crime, but something about those genuine sea green eyes and that beguiling mouth makes me weak. I’ll still tie him up but what happens next- will make us both scream.

Something about his darkness and pain calls to my own, and though he knows I could kill him at any time, he still fights to possess me in every dripping, consuming and tantalizing way.

Come inside if you dare where real sex slave stories are my inspiration and I’ll tell you the story of a serial murderess and the life altering events that made her a Lover of the Dead.

Advance Praise

“Rabbiosi’s books are beautifully written, twisted and sadistic, and will consume you from the first page until the very end and you will want more.” -Under the Night Sky book review.

“After the first chapter, I looked at the clock and sighed because I knew exactly what I was going to be doing all night. 6 am alarm be damned.” -Nicole Horn, author of Sapphire Crystal Rose series.

“Gripping, dark and exciting, I can’t wait to get the next in the series.” -Desiree Ferreira

“These books are sexy and twisted, with true sex slave tales inspiring the backstory of the main character. There’s a lot of darkness with a touch of crazy, and I was truly entertained.” -Amazon User

Wednesday Dinner – Sausage & Peppers

8 Italian pork fennel sausages, sweet or hot (about 2 pounds)

  • Extra-virgin olive oil

  • 3 or 4 medium bell peppers, a mix of red and yellow, sliced into 1/4-inch strips

  • 2 medium red onions, sliced into 1/4-inch half-moons

  • Salt and pepper

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

  • Pinch of crushed red pepper

  • Pinch of dried oregano

  • Basil leaves, for garnish

PREPARATION

  1. Prick each sausage in several places with a skewer or the tip of paring knife to prevent bursting. Put sausages in one layer in a skillet. Add water to cover and bring to a simmer. Cook for 5 minutes, then cover, turn off heat and let steep.

  2. Place a wide skillet over high heat and add 2 tablespoons olive oil. When oil is hot, add sliced peppers and onions. Season generously with salt and pepper, and cook, stirring frequently, until softened and beginning to brown, about 10 minutes. Adjust heat as necessary if mixture seems to be cooking too quickly. Add garlic just at the end, stir to incorporate and cook 1 minute more.

  3. Transfer pepper mixture to a platter. Over medium heat, coat pan with 1 tablespoon olive oil, add sausages and cook 2 to 3 minutes per side, to brown. Top pepper mixture with cooked sausages. Sprinkle with crushed red pepper and oregano and garnish with basil leaves.

  4. Season with Salt & Pepper to taste and serve with rice or pasta!

The OA Part 2 Release Date Announced – View Trailer

If you’ve watched The OA on Netflix, you’ll know it’s a little wacky but it’s also SO good!

Bringing a deeper perspective of time, life, and love, The OA delivers a beautiful story that I was hoping would continue soon but without a release date, I wasn’t sure if it was actually happening or not, until yesterday when I saw the new trailer for Part 2?

With Prairie (Brit Marling) staring in this series, you get all kinds of feels watching her get separated from her father, navigating blindness while living with her new adoptive family before getting kidnapped by a mad scientist, Hap (Jason Isaacs), who’s trying to harness the power he believes special individuals who have experienced a near-death experience have.

In the new trailer, we see Prairie living in an alternate universe where she’s the Russian Heiress she believes herself to be. So what will happen this season?

Will Prairie continue her search for Homer? Will she come face-to-face with her kidnapper again? Who knows, but I’m ready!

Games of chance, unexpected situations, and hours of sin!
Thirteen bestselling and award-winning authors are turning up the heat in an anthology featuring brand-new show-stopping stories set in Las Vegas. Roll the dice and get ready to feel the heat!

Night Games by T.K. Leigh:
Note to self: Never agree to play an innocent dice game during a blackout in Vegas. I should have known it wouldn’t remain innocent, not in the city of sin.

Night & Day by Bethany Lopez:
One explosive weekend together nearly ruined them. But, there’s no way Simone and Micah can ignore their chemistry when they’re alone in the dark.

Close Encounter by Stephanie St. Klaire:
The day started with a quick screw, a couple of quirky two-bit cons and ended with a diabolical serial killer. What do you do when the lights go out? Run.

Absolutely Mine by Terri E. Laine:
I made a promise to stay away from my best friend’s little sister. But it’s Vegas and that’s one promise I’m probably going to break.

Honeymoon Hideaway by Cary Hart:
What’s worse than being locked in room with a vibrating bed and your sworn enemy? Waking up next to him… naked! Did I mention he’s also my boss? Oops.

The Do-Over by Christi Barth:
The best way to move on after being dumped? A hot fling. An even better way? Revenge sex and the chance to turn the tables on the guy who dumped you…

Just Us by J.H. Croix:
Ellie asks me to promise her one thing. We can’t tell her brother about us. Small problem though. One night will never be enough.

Dirty Thoughts by C.A. Harms:
He was the crush I never thought I’d see again. Yet here we were in Vegas, during a total blackout. I figure why not explore all the possibilities, or more like let him explore me?

Hard Luck by K.A. Ware:
Ellis James is my kryptonite, the only person who could drag me back to Vegas after I promised myself I was done with that life. I’d bleed for her, I’d die for her, but can I save her?

Becoming His by K.I. Lynn:
When I slammed into Hollywood heartthrob Reid Gallagher, I never imagined it would turn into a first date I’d never forget. After all, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas…right?

Going Down by Lisa Shelby:
She’s the only person I’ve ever loved and I’m the last person she wants to see. She’d hoped to avoid me as much as possible in Vegas, but when we get stuck alone in an elevator, not even she can deny that our chemistry still runs hot.

Blind Faith by Lauren Runow:
I never expected to be locked out of my room basically naked in a total blackout. Thinking that would be the biggest shock of my night was my first mistake.

Toil & Trouble by Tess Sharpe; Jessica Spotswood – #BOOKREVIEW

Anything about Witches… count me in and sign me up!

To say I loved this book is an understatement. A complete anthology with several stories of women bold enough to be who they are so completely that it’s nothing less than inspiring.

So many people feel like they don’t fit in, especially young women who are growing and learning how to be uniquely themselves, it’s not easy. If you have different ideas, thoughts and even an open mind, it can be construed as weird or freakish even.

Filled with 15 stories, this book encapsulates femininity and strength between the covers and it’s a fantastic read for adults but more so for the teenage girls who are busy trying to discover themselves at their core.

I loved it! Thank you Harlequin Teen, Tess Sharpe, Jessica Spotswood and Netgalley for the ARC!

Description

Scorn the witch. Fear the witch. Burn the witch.

History is filled with stories of women accused of witchcraft, of fearsome girls with arcane knowledge. Toil & Trouble features fifteen stories of girls embracing their power, reclaiming their destinies and using their magic to create, to curse, to cure—and to kill.

A young witch uses social media to connect with her astrology clients—and with a NASA-loving girl as cute as she is skeptical. A priestess of death investigates a ritualized murder. A bruja who cures lovesickness might need the remedy herself when she falls in love with an altar boy. A theater production is turned upside down by a visiting churel. In Reconstruction-era Texas, a water witch uses her magic to survive the soldiers who have invaded her desert oasis. And in the near future, a group of girls accused of witchcraft must find their collective power in order to destroy their captors.

This collection reveals a universal truth: there’s nothing more powerful than a teenage girl who believes in herself.

Advance Praise

“At the heart of each [story] is a girl (or girls) learning to discover her power…The collective impact is undeniably resounding, and the particularly strong back half will leave readers more than a little bewitched themselves.” Booklist, starred review

“A short story collection that illustrates the multitudes of girlhood, womanhood, and magic…this powerful and diverse collection is perfect for fans of female-led fantasy stories. No damsels in distress to be found here.”Kirkus Reviews, starred review

Stolen Obsession by Marlene M. Bell

Mystery, art, cursed jewelry and romance? Yes! This hit all the right buttons and gave me all the feels!

I wasn’t sure going into it if it would be something I would enjoy as much as I did, but I was pleasantly surprised. I’ve not been reading a lot of romance lately but being that it was accompanied by a thrilling plot, I was not disappointed.

Description

People die, but legends live on.

New York antiquities appraiser Annalisse Drury recently lost her best friend to murder. The killer’s identity may be linked to her friend’s expensive missing bracelet—a 500-year-old artifact that carries an ancient curse, one that unleashes evil upon any who dare wear the jewelry created for the Persian royal family.

Weeks later, Annalisse sees a matching necklace at a Manhattan gallery opening. She begs the owner to destroy the cursed piece, but her pleas fall on deaf ears—despite the unnatural death that occurs during the opening. With two victims linked to the jewelry, Annalisse is certain she must act.

Desperate, Annalisse enlists the gallery owner’s son to help—even though she’s afraid he’ll break her heart. Wealthy and devastatingly handsome, with a string of bereft women in his wake, Greek playboy Alec Zavos dismisses Annalisse’s concerns—until his parents are ripped from the Zavos family yacht during their ocean voyage near Crete.

Annalisse and Alec race across two oceans to save his mother, feared dead or kidnapped. When the killer changes tactics and goes after Alec behind Annalisse’s back, can her plan to rescue Alec’s mother save them all?

Hold on for a heart-thumping, thrilling adventure through exotic lands in this fast-moving romantic suspense mystery by Marlene M. Bell.

Advance Praise

“An irresistible page turner. Bell’s enthusiasm shines through her narrative, giving her readers a story of substance they can sink their teeth into, not merely a book ticking all the romance boxes. This is a thoroughly successful melding of thriller and romance. With a splash of international adventure and plenty of surprises, Stolen Obsession is an entertaining read and a great beginning to the Annalisse Series.” Self Publishing Review, ★★★★½

Don’t Trust Me by Jessica Lynch – #BOOKREVIEW

The idea that a small remote village, with only 192 residents, and no cell or internet service makes for a great story to begin with, but adding the intense visual descriptions made this one even better!

Although I did feel the story was a bit disjointed throughout, I found the pivotal moment to smooth it out with a big twist!

I gave this a 4 out 5 stars – my only gripe was that the characters were a bit stiff and it was hard to like or dislike them. The story will definitely stick with me, whereas the characters will most likely stay behind!

Overall, I was stoked for this ARC from Netgalley and BooksGoSocial and I’m so happy to have picked it up!

Description

Welcome to Hamlet. Population: 192.

You can’t find it on any map, GPS or directions site. A small village tucked between a mountain and a valley, Hamlet is the sort of place where everyone knows everyone — and their business, too. There’s no television. No phones. Only one way in and, for the locals, barely any way out. The sheriff is the law, the only doctor moonlights as the coroner, and outsiders rarely come to town.

Murders are even rarer.

A treacherous storm, a flat tire and a touch of serendipity causes Tessa Sullivan and her husband Jack to stumble upon the narrow strait that leads into Hamlet. It was supposed to be a one night stop until the rain let up and Jack could figure out how to fix the tire — until Tess lands herself in the local jail cell overnight and Jack is found dead in their hotel room the next morning. There’s no doubt it was murder, but with his gentle wife having an airtight alibi, the sheriff has to wonder: who had any cause to kill the outsider?

And was he only the first victim?

Dr. De Angelis doesn’t think so. Neither does Deputy Walsh. With Tess looking more and more like the killer’s next target, both men take the time to comfort and protect the young widow. But only one of them is sincere. The other just wants her to himself now that her husband is out of the way.

Alone and afraid, who can she trust?

Advance Praise

Don’t Trust Me has a dark and creepy tone from page one and doesn’t let up. This is a wild ride of a book peppered with violence, romance, and mystery all taking place in one strange town. Just when I was sure that I had it figured it, the author threw in a twist that left me breathless. I couldn’t stop reading and loved the mysterious feel to her writing. Jessica Lynch’s tale could easily be turned into a Hollywood screenplay. My favorite character was Maria DeAngelis, the owner of the local inn where much of the action takes place. She is warm, friendly, and slightly tragic and felt like a breath of fresh air in this small town. Enjoy! – 5 Star Review Amazon

Okay, when I saw the cover, I knew I’d be totally sold. When I read the blurb, I blurted, “shut up and take my money.”

The make-believe town of Hamlet has a dark and eerie character. It kind of like reminds me of this theory that there’s still uncivilized locals inside the Amazon forest. It fascinates me when a book introduces a place or character that’s completely made up, because anything and everything can just happen. It forces me to think of what could’ve happened under normal circumstances. But even if Hamlet is a bit strange, the people are quite friendly and…uhm, normal. I mean, they are pretty much, or more or less the same people you’d encounter in a small town setup.

This story has a dark tone, from the first page up until the last. The author did a fine job to keep me breathless, and just when I thought I’ve already figured out who is who and what is what, boom! An unexpected plot twist slapped me through.

Mystery and suspense fans out there, this book is highly recommended to be in your bookshelf. I wouldn’t suggest you read this as a bedtime read though, since you might not be able to sleep because you wouldn’t be able to put it down. Also, adrenaline rush. – 5 Star Review on Amazon.

About Jessica Lynch

Jessica Lynch has been writing since she was 8 and wrote a short story called “Bugs Bunny Meets the Little Mermaid”, mainly because they were the only characters she could illustrate. After spending more than a decade writing fan fiction, she decided to try to write an original novel. While there are many manuscripts on her hard drive, her debut novel “Don’t Trust Me” was finally published in December 2017. It’s a mystery/thriller, which is a departure from most of her other writing. Coming soon: a paranormal romance series, as well as a foray into Greek mythology.

What We Buried by Kate A. Boorman – #BOOKREVIEW

Liv and Jory, siblings who couldn’t be more different are on the hunt for their missing parents. From the sounds of things, maybe they’re not worth finding? You’ll have to pick this one up to find out.

I didn’t care so much for the characters but the plot made up for that. Overall this is a great YA read!

Thank you Netgalley, Kate A. Boorman, and Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group for the ARC!

Description

Told from the split viewpoints of Liv and Jory, Kate A. Boorman’s What We Buried is a psychological thrill ride that deftly explores how memories can lie, how time can bend, and how reconciling the truth can be a matter of life or death.

“Do you ever just want to be believed?”

Siblings Liv and Jory Brewer have grown up resenting each another. Liv—former pageant queen and reality TV star—was groomed for a life in the spotlight, while her older brother, Jory, born with a partial facial paralysis, was left in the shadows. The only thing they have in common is contempt for their parents.

Now Liv is suing her mom and dad for emancipation, and Jory views the whole thing as yet another attention-getting spectacle. But on the day of the hearing, their parents mysteriously vanish, and the siblings are forced to work together. Liv feels certain she knows where they are and suspects that Jory knows more than he’s telling…which is true.

What starts as a simple overnight road trip soon takes a turn for the dangerous and surreal. And as the duo speeds through the deserts of Nevada, brother and sister will unearth deep family secrets that force them to relive their pasts as they try to retain a grip on the present.

The Nursery by Bill Thompson – #BOOKREVIEW #ARC

Are supernatural forces at play in this old Antebellum mansion or is someone looking to spook and even harm the new family?

Dark and creepy with a magic mirror and a locked room? Yes, sign me up! The Nursery was everything I was looking for in a quick read.

Jordan and his twin, eight year old girls are rebuilding their lives after the passing of their mother in an old mansion that has a few stipulations for the new residents. The house has been vacant for 50 years and has a room that’s locked and not to be disturbed by anyone. Without the key, Jordan tries to forget about the room, but his daughters have other ideas.

With the help of his friends and few paranormal professionals, Jordan and his girls find out the secrets of the house and the room, but will they survive?

I was impressed by the complexity of each of the characters, growing fond of each of them. I couldn’t wait to turn the page to find out their fates and I wasn’t disappointed!

Description

A house that sat empty for fifty years as its dead owner instructed. A locked room with no key. A single father with eight-year-old twin girls. A dusty, dank nursery from long ago that no child ever played in.

There are eerie things going on at The Arbors in St. Francisville, Louisiana. Architect Bart Blanchard is joined by his friend Callie Pilantro (“Callie – The Bayou Hauntings 1”) and Landry Drake (“Forgotten Men – The Bayou Hauntings 2”) to learn the secrets of a domineering matriarch whose two husbands died in bizarre manners. As they discover more secrets in the house, someone watches from a hidden room at the very top of the huge old mansion. “The Nursery” will keep you up late at night wondering what’s behind the next door, what lies beyond a mysterious mirror and who waits to kill one of the people at The Arbor.

Vegan London by Serena Lee

Even if you’re not vegan, this guide to London’s best plant-based eateries is worth the read!

You’ll never find yourselves wandering the streets of London looking for a delicious bite with this book in your bag!

The best part of traveling is immersing yourself in the local culture and the best way to accomplish that is by taste-testing different local flavors and going out of your comfort zone a little, to experience something new.

I’ve gone totally Vegan in the past but went back to my meat-eating ways after struggling with family dinners. However, over the last couple of years, without even realizing it, I’ve navigated away from eating so much meat and indulge in red meat occasionally. Chicken no longer does it for me, no matter how it’s made, I just don’t want it. You’ll noticed after a few really good vegan meals, that you won’t even miss the meat at all. Flavors come alive with cooking techniques and spice medleys to bring any veggie dish to life!

If you’re not quite ready to try Vegan recipes in your own kitchen, I recommend visiting restaurants that will satisfy your curiosity and maybe even give you some ideas to try at home.

About Dead and Gone:

You ever have an out of body experience? Like one of those moments where you’re standing on a street corner watching yourself do something monumentally stupid? Something you know you shouldn’t do but you just can’t help yourself?

Three weeks ago, Trent and I were deep into the Honeymoon stage of love, I swore I wouldn’t be the first one to rock the boat—Lord knows with our two Irish tempers it would happen soon enough—so when he made me promise to keep my nose and our grandmothers out of his investigation, I did.

It didn’t hurt that his head was buried between my legs at the time either. But then Daisy called me begging for help and what kind of bestie would I be if I shut the door in her face? That’s right, a sh*tty one. So I packed up our grandmothers and their gogo boots, g-strings and pasties to get to the bottom of things. Only problem is if Trent catches us I’ll be dead meat, folks.

My name is Shelby Whitmore, Funeral and Obituaries columnist for the San Diego Metro News and most likely to be single again if I survive this sh*t. But hey, at least I’m still a hit with the blue hairs . . .

I’m dead meat. Literally. Dead. Meat.

Last month, when Trent and I started up again, I promised him that I wouldn’t do anything crazy. I wouldn’t go off half cocked. And most importantly, I wouldn’t follow our grandmothers down the crazy assed rabbit hole of Granny Grabbers and Dangerous Dames.

“You’re not police officers,” he had said.

And I agreed. We’re not.

Trent also might have coerced me into agreeing with him in the most despicable ways. One minute my legs are wrapped around his neck and my eyes are rolled back in my head and I’m one more “Oh, yes,” away from the promised land.

“Shell,” he said to me in between licks and kisses. “Promise me you won’t do anything crazy.” He kissed me again and again.

“Yes,” I ignored him as I rocked against his mouth moving closer and closer.

“Promise,” he commanded as I spiraled closer and closer to the edge.

“Yes!” I cried.

“You promise?” He asked me again but I was too far gone.

“Sweet Petunia, yes!”

“I’m so glad we agree. You have no idea how happy this makes me, Shelby.” Trent smiled as he slithered up my body like the snake that he is.

Although, I had an idea how happy my climax had made him as it was currently poking me in the thigh. Before I had a chance to catch my breath or even question what, exactly, Trent and I agreed on, he slid all the way inside me to the hilt and my eyes rolled back in my head.

*****

As It turned out, we had allegedly agreed that I wouldn’t go on any more cappers with my friend, Daisy, the retired hooker, and our grandmothers. Sophia was out, she was at some big, fancy figure skating competition in Chicago.

I still agreed. I mean, what kind of trouble could two widowed senior citizens, a retired hooker, and an obituaries columnist for the local paper get into. I mean really. Lightning doesn’t strike twice. It doesn’t, right?

And Trent and I had worked out some kinks. He yelled less. I pretended to listen more. And when I didn’t he used his handsome mouth in better ways than yelling if you catch my drift. We were officially in the love bubble. The honeymoon stage. I wasn’t ready to rock the boat for just anything all willy nilly.

But Daisy, my sweet, fabulous, eccentrically dressed best friend had a problem. Several of her . . . ummm . . . colleaguesfrom the old days were missing. Like really missing, not shacked up with a John. And she was worried. Yes, my sweet friend, Daisy, had a problem and she came to me for help, advice, I don’t really know what. All I know is that led me to today as I sit, handcuffed to the pipes of a bathroom sink in a filthy motel just this side of Mexico, dressed like a cheap hooker. Yep, I’m in trouble, folks. Just like I said . . . Dead. Meat. My name is Shelby Whitmore, funeral and obituaries columnist for the San Diego Metro News and most likely to be single again if I survive this shit. I guess I should start at the beginning . . .

While the kids were held captive by one of the men donning a heavy tan fire suit, Ali felt someone come stand beside her. She glanced to her right and found Kellen. He seemed much bigger, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with her, than he had the other day. Ali wouldn’t consider herself short, and he still had at least six inches on her.

“You doin’ okay?” he whispered, keeping his eyes trained forward.

“Aces. Why do you ask?”

“Oh, I don’t know. Could have something to do with the pale skin and choppy breathing. Or maybe it’s the way you’re swaying on your feet.”

Crap.

She hadn’t thought it was so noticeable.

She caught the eye of one of her students who’d turned to talk to the boy next to him and motioned for him to be quiet and pay attention before she whispered back, barely moving her lips, “Occupational hazard. I’m fine.”

“Of course you are, but why don’t you have a seat before you fall over?”

Ali gritted her teeth. More than a little annoyed that he’d noticed. Annoyed that she felt like crap. Annoyed that he’d ordered her around. And annoyed that the pills were barely keeping her on her feet. “I said, I’m fine.”

“Whatever you say, Ali Cat.”

“Excuse me? Did you just call me an alley cat?”

When he didn’t respond, she glanced up at him and found him completely relaxed, calmly watching the firemen who began taking questions from the kids.

That only annoyed her further.

“You know, in polite society, people don’t go around pointing out how crappy someone else looks.”

“And, if you’d retract your claws a little, you’d realize I never said you looked crappy. I was simply asking if you were feeling okay.”

Double crap.

Ali closed her eyes.

He was right, and she was being a bitch again.

She had ninety more minutes before she could head home and quarantine herself—and her bitchiness—in a hot bath where she couldn’t infect anyone else.

But there was something she needed to do first.

“I’m sorry.”

“Accepted,” Kellen easily returned.

“No, not just for today,” she continued. “For last week in front of the diner. I was snippy that day, too, and you didn’t deserve it then any more than you deserve it now.”

“Has everyone been graced with your sunny demeanor lately, or am I just that lucky?”

She huffed out a surprised laugh. “You’ve been luckier than most.”

“Any particular reason?”

None that she was going to share. “Luck of the draw, I guess.”

“Fair enough.”

“And I appreciate your concern. Thank you for checking on me.”

See, I can be nice.

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides – #BOOKREVIEW #NEWRELEASE #BOTM

Woah! This was one heck of a story with a spin that came out of nowhere.

Alicia is a patient at The Grove after she allegedly shot her husband in the face five times one night but no one knows why she committed such a crime against the man she supposedly loved because she’s remained silent since the night of the shooting. Never uttering a word to anyone about her state of mind, she’s left heavily medicated and forgotten about until Theo, a new phsychotherapist practicing at the facility develops a special interest in getting Alicia to talk. What she has to say will change everything!

Told from Theo’s point of view and sharing Alicia’s journal, the reader gets a look into both minds throughout and can empathize with Alicia on so many levels, while Theo is a little more confusing. Finding his motive to investigate something that didn’t involve him had me curious the whole way through, until finally the reveal was made. What an A-ha moment that was!

The twist was great but the other details into the darkness, art, and personal relationships made the story come to life in more ways that just finding out what really happened. Layer upon layer, building until it all comes together!

About Alex

Alex Michaelides was born in Cyprus in 1977. He wrote the film The Devil You Know starring Rosamund Pike, and co-wrote The Brits are Coming. The Silent Patient is first novel, and was inspired by a post graduate course in psychotherapy, and working part-time at a secure psychiatric unit.

Tend & Befriend in the Workplace – Power of the Pack from vinazine.com

“Me” — not “we” — has been the traditional mindset for women at work. Women in general rate high on nurturing, compassion, and empathy. These qualities are also essential for the best leaders today. But for too long, a scarcity of women in leadership positions has conditioned women to believe that we must be competitive with one another in order to succeed.

The truth is that most women are natural collaborators, a quality that we tend to embrace at a young age. TheOrganisation for Economic Co-operation and Development pooled datafrom 52 countries to examine how 15-year-old girls and boys perform when asked to problem-solve as a team. Get this: groups of girls didn’t just outperform in general. They outperformed in every single country surveyed.

OUR INHERENT STRENGTHS ARE WHAT MAKE US STRONG LEADERS

In a Pew Research Center studyreleased earlier this year, women out-scored men inall but one of the study’s key research qualities. They are seen as more compassionate and empathetic; they were able to find compromises more effectively than men; they maintain a tone of civility and respect. It’s time to own our strengths, because it’s these qualities that make us great in the workplace.

Every workplace is unique; there is no “one size fits all” recipe for success. But there is a basic roadmap that applies to every industry: that when we stand out, stand up, and stand together, we all succeed. Recognize your own strengths, and surround yourself with others who can be strong where you are not. Collaboration is at its best — and most effective — when everyone taps into their unique strengths to orient toward a shared goal: collective success.

And women are uniquely suited to build collaborative relationships, both in their personal and professional lives.

Collaboration in the workplace isn’t justa good idea; it’s good for the bottom line. Consider the 2017 joint studybetween The Institute for Corporate Productivity (i4cp) and Rob Cross, Professor of Global Business at Babson College, which examined more than 1,000 companies to determine what makes them successful. Their core finding? That high-performing companies were 5.5 times more likely to incentivize collaboration than their low-performing counterparts.

Or what about that 2017 Deloittestudy, which found that “the creation of social cohesion is at the core of success… Employees that collaborate the most are happier and are more cohesive in teams than other workers.” People are more apt to be engaged in the success of their organization when they build collaborative relationships with their coworkers.

THERE’S POWER IN THE PACK

As women, we tend to band together. Take the “Tend and Befriend”study, which found that women respond to stress by seeking out and nurturing others, while men adopt the “fight or flight” mentality. For centuries, it’s been a survival tactic. But now, it’s a success tactic. When we invest in the success of one another, we have the potential to succeed together. The Shine Theory, used by female athletes in the Olympics, is the belief that when one woman helps another woman rise, we allshine. Women account for more than 48 percent of the global workforce; our time to shine bright is now. And collaboration over competition will help us advance equality a whole lot faster. A woman alone has power; together we have impact.

JUNK MAIL by Kendall Ryan – New Release

NEW RELEASE! Coming April 23rd!

Here’s a little taste of what’s to come….

It all started with a sexy selfie.

Texted to the wrong number.

Oops.

Not my finest moment—but I have nothing to be ashamed of.

She thought I was no better, and I quote, than the knuckle-dragging douche-bags she was never dating again.

It was a stupid dare from a girl I’d met online, but since she’d given me a fake number, I didn’t feel bad that my interests were suddenly focused elsewhere—on the fiery and sharp-tongued, Peyton that I found myself sparring with over text for the rest of the evening.

The following day, my case of mistaken identity came back to bite me in the banana.

When I strolled into the office, I was introduced to Peyton as the new client I needed to win over. The Peyton, in case you’re not tracking.

And let’s just say she had my full attention.

Brains? Check.

Beauty? Oh yeah.

And the best part? She hated me on sight.

Dear God, do I love a challenge.

Let the games begin.
